Forerunner of the Computer Center was the Computer Station of the former Department of Mathematics of Yan’an University, which was established in 1981. In order to meet the demands of the university’s all-round development in teaching and scientific research, the Computer Station was expanded into the Computer Center. The center now has 14  members of faculty and staff, of which 11 are full-time teachers. Among the full-time teachers, two have high-ranking titles, and seven have intermediate titles. The teaching and research group is reasonably structured in terms of age and knowledge, and full of youthful spirit, teaches rigorously, and researches progressively, with reliable laboratorial technology.
Through painstaking efforts of many years at the beginning of reform and opening up, and along with the continuous all-round development of higher education, the center has established very superior environment for teaching and research. At the present, the center has five laboratories with floor areas of 1500 M2. Four laboratories are connected to the local area network. The center is equipped with 400 top quality P4 microcomputers, and four servers. All the labs can be connected with the internet via the campus network. The Hong Kong celebrity, Mr. Fang Runhua donated the No. 5 lab, namely Shuhua Electronic Intelligence Center, facilitated with 120 DELL microcomputers, reaching a higher level of laboratorial equipment.
The major task of the Computer Center is the teaching of basics of computer of the whole university, and has taught many courses, including BASIC, FORTRAN, PASCAL, DBASE, FoxBASE, C Language for Programming Design, Basics of Computer Application, Basics of Computer Culture, QBASIC, Visual BASIC, and Visual Foxpro. At the same time, teachers of this center actively participate in scientific research, and have attained good achievements. The center takes the lead in using multimedia in teaching, and has won second- and third-rate prizes for Teaching Achievements of Shaanxi Province, three first-rate Prizes for Teaching Achievements awarded by Yan’an University, and one Prize achievements in Science and Technology warded by Yan’an University, and has finished two research projects funded by the university. Many students trained by this center are active in all the important construction fronts of Northern Shaanxi, and have been in the backbone of the telecommunication business. The passing rate of the examinees trained by this center in theNational Computer Rank Examination is much higher than the national average of passing rate.
