College of Humanities and Social Sciences

     The College of Humanities and Social Sciences was established in December 2002,when the Department of History and the Division of Social Sciences were merged to form the largest college of Yan’an University. The college provides diversified education on many different levels, with a strong faculty and distinguished achievements in teaching and research.
  The college’s faculty consists of 65 teachers, of which seven are professors and 27 are associate professors. There are three faculty research institutions including The Research Institute of History and Culture of Northern Shaanxi, the only one of its kind in China. The Research Institute of Korean History and Culture, which received a signboard conferred by the ambassador of South Korea upon its foundation, is an institution that researches the history and culture of South Korea, and the issues of North Korea and Eastern Asia. The Research Institute for the History of Historical Science is engaged in the research of Marxist historical science and the history of western historical science.
  There are three bachelor programs in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences: History, Social Work, and Pubic Administration. The History program mainly fosters qualified personnel for research and teaching in history, as well as management of archives in liberal arts. The college offers over 30 courses, including General History of China, General History of the World, and Introduction to Historical Science. The Social Work program mainly fosters high-ranking professionals who can be engaged in social welfare, research on social policies, social administration, development and management of community, social service, and evaluation. The college offers 26 courses, including Sociology, Introduction to Social Work, and Social Statistics. The Public Administration program mainly fosters high-ranking professionals with knowledge in the theories of modern administration and economics, administrative science, and jurisprudence, and that have mastered the technology and techniques of modern administration, and can be engaged in administration, professional work, and research in party and governmental organizations, enterprises, institutions, and labor and social welfare departments. There are 24 courses offered, including Principles of administration, Introduction to Public Administration, and Public Policies.
  There are five graduate programs in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Ancient History of China, the Modern and Contemporary History of China, the Fundamental Principles of Marxism, Political Education, and International Research of Marxism. The program of Modern and Contemporary History of China was accredited in 2003, and began recruiting students in 2004. This program mainly fosters professional researchers and teachers of higher education in modern and contemporary history of China, and provides the study fields of modern history of China, contemporary history of China, history of the People’s Republic of China, history of modern and contemporary Chinese political thought, and history of Marxist historical science. The program of Marxist Theories and Political Education was accredited in 2003, and began recruiting students in 2004. This program fosters qualified personnel for research and teaching in Marxist theory. It provides the study fields of Marxist philosophy and modernization, socialist market economy, Deng Xiaoping theory and the innovation and development in contemporary China, Mao Zedong thought and social reforms in contemporary China, and the theory and practice of political education. The program of Ancient History of China was accredited in 2005, and began to recruit students in 2006. This program mainly fosters teachers of higher education in ancient history of China, and researchers in historical science, as well as professionals in cultural causes and theoretical publicity.
  In terms of research, over the past three years teachers of this college have published over 300 academic papers and over 50 books, of which four papers were in national authoritative journals; over 30 were in referred journals. In addition to the professional teaching, the college undertakes teaching and research of Marxist theory as general courses for the whole university. The college has won many prizes awarded by the provincial Department of Education for “Reforms in Marxist Theory Teaching and Advanced Unit of Higher Education Institutions of Shaanxi Province”. In recent years, prestigious universities have admitted many students of this college as master and doctorate students, of whom five were admitted by Peking University.
   
While emphasizing the professional learning of the students, the college also puts due emphasis on strengthening the educational foundation of the students and enhancing the students’ comprehensive capability through rich and varied activities on campus through student corporations, including the Student Union, the Society of Painting and Calligraphy, and the Literary Society of Free Travel. In recent years, students of this college have won many prizes in various competitions of recreation and sports. In 2003 and 2004, in the debating competition sponsored by the university, participants of this college won top prizes consecutively.  In 2004, the college won the prize for the best unit in the administration of student life and construction of spiritual civilization at the provincial level. Because of the quality education and high caliber of students, the employment rate of the graduates of this college has been above 90% in recent years. Meanwhile, the college actively seeks means to assist poor students financially, and has founded the “Loan Foundation of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences”.  Many students in need have been assisted.
