Transportation in Yan’an
Yan’an is situated in the ravine of the Loess plateau. In recent years, rapid progress has been made in infrastructure of transportation. The conditions for traveling have been greatly improved.
Highways:
The no. 210 national way, numerous roads at the provincial level, and free ways have connected Yan’an with the provincial capital, Xi’an, and most cities in northern Shaanxi. It only takes about 4 hours to travel from Xi’an to Yan’an, at a distance of 370 kilometers.
Taxi:
Taxis from two taxi companies can be seen on road in the city everywhere. The initial price is five yuan, plus 1.2 yuan per kilometer.
Public buses:
Five bus routes, No. 1, No. 3, No. 8, No. 12, 1, and No. 16, that operate in the central city pass by Yan’an University, of which the No. 1, No. 3, and No. 12 buses go to the railway station and the biggest long distance bus station, the Southern Bus Station.
Eight bus routes go to the outskirts of the city in all directions. They are No. 5, No. 6, No. 10, No. 11, No. 13, No. 14, No. 15, and No. 20.

Lodging in Yan’an Vernacular cave dwelling: The cave house is a representative vernacular dwelling of the Loess Plateau in northern China, which is a historical legacy of cave dwelling. There are earth caves, brick caves and stone caves, most of which are chiseled or framed on mountainside, taking the advantage of the situation, forming an arch in the upper part and straight and flat shape in the lower part. They are cool in summer and warm in winter.
Modern hotels: There are about 50 modern hotels at the star level of two to 4 in the city. Yan’an University has two hotels, the Jiahe Hotel and the Experts’ Hotel.
